Standard deduction of ₹75,000 (new) / ₹50,000 (old) is subtracted from salary. Employer must deduct TDS as per the regime declared by the employee via Form 12BB / declaration at the start of the year.
Employer does NOT deduct surcharge — only income tax. Surcharge is paid via self-assessment tax at ITR filing. Health & Education Cess of 4% is included in monthly TDS.
Employees earning below the basic exemption can submit a declaration to the employer for nil or lower TDS. Rent paid (with landlord PAN above ₹1L rent) and home loan interest certificates reduce taxable income for TDS computation.
